President Lourenço Analyzes Glr'S Security with UN Envoy

Africa-Press – Angola. President João Lourenço and the United Nations envoy, Huang Xia, discussed on Thursday (26), in Luanda, Security on the African continent, particularly in the Great Lakes Region and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, held at the Presidential Palace, Huang Xia highlighted Angola’s role as a central player in mediation and the search for African solutions to crises on the continent, emphasizing the Angolan Head of State’s leadership within the framework of the African Union and the Luanda Process.

According to the diplomat, Angola’s efforts have been recognized by countries in the sub-region, the continent, and the international community, particularly in monitoring negotiations between the DRC Government and the M23 armed group in Doha, Qatar.

The UN representative noted that some progress has already been made, such as the signing of agreements and the start of negotiations, but he considered greater participation from all relevant stakeholders necessary to ensure lasting peace and overall stability in the region.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Great Lakes Region stressed that is essential for all stakeholders engage constructively so that a definitive results capable of ensuring the stability and development desired by the continent can achieved.

A historic agreement between DRC authorities and representatives of the M23 group was signed last June under the mediation of the United States of America, Qatar, and the African Union, aiming to end a long-standing armed conflict in the region.
