Africa-Press – Angola. An exhibition featuring more than 130 pictures from different moments in Angola’s history has been on display since Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of National Independence.
The exhibition will be open to the public until October 7th, an initiative of the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva.
The event is taking place under the motto “Angola 50 Years: Preserving and Valuing Achievements, Building a Better Future”.
According to a statement , the pictures on display embody various messages linked to Angola’s historical context, from the milestones of Independence to the country’s achievements, such as the consolidation of sovereignty and the levels of development achieved over five decades.
The opening session of the cultural event was attended by approximately 300 guests, including diplomatic representatives, authorities and international partners, diplomats from the Permanent Mission of Angola and the country’s embassy in Switzerland, as well as the Angolan community.
The opening ceremony included Angolan dance Kazukuta and a performance by the Angolan international singer Té Macedo, featuring songs from the traditional Angolan repertoire, accompanied by traditional instruments and a strong lyrical vocal component.
The time was an opportunity to present to the entities accredited to the UN in Geneva Angola’s achievements in promoting sustainable development and the well-being of its citizens, as well as to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation with other member states and international organizations linked to the Geneva International ecosystem.
On the occasion, the Permanent Representative of Angola, Ana Maria de Oliveira, highlighted the political, diplomatic, cultural, and social and economic achievements since the proclamation of National Independence, as well as the role played by Angolan diplomacy through the multilateralism adopted as the country’s foreign policy since November 11, 1975.
“This historic milestone was not only the result of years of struggle and sacrifice, but also the beginning of a new chapter in the construction of a sovereign, united, and progressive nation. Today, half a century later, we celebrate not only the achievement of independence, but also the resilience of a people who, even in the face of adversities such as war, instability, and development challenges, managed to find the strength to rebuild their country and seek collective well-being”, she said.
On the occasion, the Permanent Representative of Mozambique, Geraldo Gonçalves Miguel Saranga, one of the guests at the event, praised the efforts of the Angolan people and nation throughout history, as well as their resilience in the face of current challenges in building a new Angola of the present and the future.
In turn, the Permanent Representative of Sao Tome and Principe to the United Nations Office, Ambassador Abigail Tiny Cosme Bonfim, praised the event and congratulated the Angolans on their 50th anniversary of independence.
