Minister Mário Oliveira Wants more Factual Journalism

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology, and Social Communication, Mário Oliveira, stated Thursday in Luanda that Angola needs journalism that explains the complexities of the times, gives everyone a voice, and guided by search for factual truth and morality.

The Minister was speaking at the ceremony to present the second-place winner of the 2025 SADC Journalism Award, in the press category, to journalist Dinis Simão.

According to the Minister, the journalism that Angola needs, and which this award celebrates, illuminates the paths and contributes to development in a wide variety of ways.

“May we, the Government and social communicators, together be architects of a more and better informed, more critical, but above all, more united Angola. An Angola that, in overcoming obstacles, will do so not because it ignored its problems, but because it knew how to discuss them with maturity, deep meaning, and a patriotic spirit,” he explained.

The Minister urged journalists to channel their collective energy into developing solutions that help overcome the difficulties faced by everyone, including media outlets, their professionals, and society as a whole.

He emphasized that the moralization of the profession and the valorization of the profession undoubtedly depend on a set of conditions, in which credibility before society constitutes one of the main pillars.

For the Minister, “when we raise the ethical and moral standards of our work, when we become indispensable to citizens seeking to understand the country, we are building the most powerful lever for our own valorization.”

He urged journalists to strengthen their role as public service, prioritizing constructive dialogue about the conflict, analysis over alarmism, and national unity over any action that divides us as professionals and as Angolans. Regarding the award, Minister Mário Oliveira said that regional recognition is not just for the professional, but rather a beacon that has illuminated all Angolan journalism for some years, demonstrating the talent, capacity, and resilience needed to compete among the best in the region and on the continent.

“This award is unequivocal proof that when we dedicate ourselves to rigor, depth, and quality, we achieve excellence,” the minister stated.

According to the Minister, at a time like Angola’s, with complex social and economic challenges affecting families, businesses, and institutions, the role of journalism becomes even more crucial.

Furthermore, the minister congratulated journalist Diniz Simão, from delegation in Cuanza-Norte, for his 2nd place in the Written Press category of the SADC Journalism Award.

He stated that the award-winning journalist showed that it is possible to do more and better, even in difficult times, and that his work should serve as an inspiration to all citizens. The ceremony was attended by the Secretaries of State for Telecommunications and Information Technology, Ângelo Buta, for Social Communication, Nuno Caldas, by the National Secretary of SADC, Flávia Lutucuta, representatives of the boards of directors of the media organizations, among others.
