Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan Vice President Esperança da Costa on Thursday highlighted the Executive’s efforts to improve the national healthcare system by integrating infrastructure and human capital to enable its strengthening.

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the 2nd International Congress on the HIV Response in Angola, she emphasized that the expansion of the healthcare and primary care network with new hospital units contributed to the improvement of healthcare.

Esperança da Costa also highlighted the progress made in the area of human capital, with 46,604 new professionals being incorporated into the national healthcare system between 2017 and 2024, in Special and General Regime careers, which allowed for a 43.6% increase in the sector’s total workforce.

Shee also highlighted that a strategic plan for staff training is underway, including a specialized training program, financed by the World Bank, lasting five years, aiming to train 38,000 health professionals in priority areas to increase the problem-solving capacity of health units, particularly at the level of primary health care.

She explained that other equally important initiatives in strengthening the national health system involve creating a favorable environment to catalyze the emergence of the pharmaceutical industry in Angola.

She noted that, in this area, actions are focused on strengthening national regulatory capacity, as well as regional integration and international cooperation.

Esperança da Costa said that the Angolan government reaffirms its commitment and determination to eliminate AIDS and viral hepatitis as public health problems by 2030, in line with the global goals established by the United Nations.

According to the minister, this goal will only be achieved with innovation, science, inclusive policies, and international solidarity.

“Therefore, this Congress represents a privileged space to update and disseminate scientific advances on HIV, viral hepatitis, and other STIs, strengthen national and international cooperation networks, and share best practices and innovative experiences,” he emphasized.

According to the source, the response to HIV and other STIs is a multisectoral challenge and requires the involvement and commitment of everyone, as well as responsible leadership, strategic vision, and political courage.

On the occasion, he also reaffirmed the spirit of an Angola of solidarity, determination, and commitment to life.
