Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and the Rob Walton Foundation signed, on Tuesday (28) in Washington D.C., a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of environmental conservation, aiming to strengthen bilateral cooperation in ecosystem protection.

The document was signed by the minister of the Environment, Ana Paula de Carvalho, and a representative of the Rob Walton Foundation, on the sidelines of the annual gala of the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF), before the Vice-President of the Republic, Esperança da Costa.

On the occasion, minister Paula de Carvalho said that Rob Walton Foundation will finance a sustainable development program that includes six conservation areas in Angola, as part of an initiative covering 162 conservation areas in Africa.

She detailed that of the aforementioned areas, four are already consolidated and two are in the process.

Among the areas covered, she pointed to the Luengue-Luiana National Park, Mavinga National Park, Cameia National Park, and one still under study in Moxico, designated Mossouma, located on the border with Zambia, where a cross-border memorandum of environmental cooperation already exists.

The minister also mentioned Iona National Park, which has a co-management model with African Parks, and which will also benefit from the support of the Oak and the Robloco Foundation.

Another area mentioned was Lizima, considered an important source of fresh water, which is in the process of being characterized as a wetland of international importance, within the framework of Angola’s efforts to integrate the African conservation network.

The governor also highlighted that Angola currently has 14 conservation areas, with the formalization of two new units underway: the Pingano Hill Range (province of Uíge) and Moco Mount (province of Huambo), the latter being the highest point in the country and of great ecological value.

According to the minister, one of the main concerns of African states continues to be the financing of programs for sustainable development.

In this sense, Angola is presenting strategies in Washington to mobilize new financial resources and consolidate international partnerships.

The annual ICCF gala aims to conserve biodiversity and protect unique ecosystems, such as the Amazon rainforest and the Congo Basin, as well as combat species extinction.

It also aims to combat climate change and protect forests that store large amounts of carbon, and to double the area of oceans under protection.
