Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the ruling MPLA, João Lourenço, deplored on Friday in Luanda the attitude of some citizens who, more than two decades after the achievement of peace, continue to adopt victimhood and self-exclusion behaviors, a posture contrary to the sentiment of the majority of the Angolan people.

Speaking at the 9th Ordinary Session of the MPLA Central Committee, Lourenço recalled that 23 years ago the country overcame the armed conflict and achieved definitive peace, stressing that all Angolans have the inalienable right to the full exercise of citizenship and participation in national development.

“We note that, even without real reasons or foundations, some compatriots insist on behaviors of permanent victimhood and self-exclusion, an attitude that does nothing to promote peace and national reconciliation,” he stated.

João Lourenço warned that this stance reveals a “hidden and ominous” political agenda for the country’s future, appealing to all citizens to abandon behaviors that contradict the feeling of unity and reconciliation of the overwhelming majority of Angolans.

The MPLA leader reaffirmed the party’s commitment to preserving the peace achieved and promoting national reconciliation in all areas of political and social life.

“The progress of our country requires the contribution of everyone: political parties, churches, businesses, professional associations, unions, and citizens committed to the homeland and the Angolan nation,” Lourenço said.

João Lourenço welcomed the initiatives of individuals and institutions in civil society and churches that, in good faith, promote peace, harmony, and debate on the paths to national reconciliation.

The president of the MPLA recalled that, since the proclamation of independence on November 11, 1975, under the leadership of President Antonio Agostinho Neto, the country has gone through periods of great challenges, but has managed to preserve the flame of freedom and consolidate its sovereign destiny.

He mentioned that achieving lasting peace on April 4, 2002, represented Angola’s second greatest historical achievement since independence, and paved the way for national reconciliation and mutual forgiveness among Angolans.

João Lourenço highlighted the role of President José Eduardo dos Santos, whom he credited for being the architect of peace.

He emphasized that the reconciliation process continued with the exhumation and transfer of Jonas Malheiro Savimbi’s remains to his homeland, an act that restored to the family the right to provide a dignified burial for the founder of UNITA.

The MPLA leader also highlighted the public apology made by the President of the Republic to all family members of the victims of the political conflicts recorded in the country between 1975 and 2002, a measure that reinforces the spirit of reconciliation and consolidation of peace.

Following this gesture, he highlighted the creation of the ministerial Commission for the Implementation of the Reconciliation Plan in Memory of the Victims of Political Conflicts (CIVICOP), which operates under the motto “Forgive and Embrace,” with the objective of promoting forgiveness, historical truth, and national cohesion.

“These facts demonstrate our true commitment to peace and national reconciliation, as we understand that only in this environment is it possible to rebuild and develop the country,” said João Lourenço.

Among the topics under analysis in this session are Local Content in the Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas Industries.

The Central Committee will also discuss the 2026 political agenda, with emphasis on the preparatory actions for the Ordinary Congress, which will serve as the basis for the preparation of the 2027 general elections.
