Africa-Press – Angola. Demining along the 172-kilometer route connecting the Gove hydroelectric plant (Huambo) to the substation in the municipality of Cuvango (Huíla) has been completed, the National Demining Center (CND) reported, Tuesday.

This undertaking now paves the way for the extension of the 220 KV Laúca high-voltage line, from Huambo to Huíla and from there to the remaining southern provinces of the country.

In statements in Cuvango, the head of the CND brigade in Huambo, responsible for the activity, Severino Buta Pinto, stated that the work was completed at the end of October.

In total, the source said, the work covered an area of 10,320 square meters, resulting in the neutralization of 18 unexploded explosive devices and 26 various munitions, including grenades, projectiles, and anti-personnel mines.

Among the collected material were two grenades, six 100-millimeter projectiles, two 122-millimeter projectiles, as well as ammunition of various calibers, notably including PMN 11M72 type mines.

Severino Pinto explained that the operations took place between April 14th and October 22nd of this year and involved 46 technicians, distributed in two brigades, from the provinces of Bié and Huambo.

The brigade chief stated that the process faced difficulties accessing the intervention areas, aggravated by the rainy season, but stressed that the work was successfully completed, ensuring the safety of the entire power line corridor, including the Chipindo and Cuvango substations.

In turn, the municipal director of Energy and Water of Cuvango, Belchior Vissetaca, considered the completion of the demining an important milestone for the advancement of the region’s electrification projects, which are already in their final stages.

“For a long time we survived with diesel generators, facing various difficulties, but with the arrival of this team, hope has been rekindled, because today we see the beginning of a new era, with the prospect of soon having our substation in operation,” he said.

Located 356 kilometers east of Lubango, Cuvango is installing a substation that will serve to carry energy from northern Angola to the provinces of Cuando and Cubango.
