Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan Foreign Minister, Téte António, on Monday in Luanda, held a telephone conversation with his counterpart of the Council of the Presidency for the Re-Foundation of the Republic of Madagascar, Ms Christine Razanamahaso, focusing on the political situation in that country and the preparations for a High-Level Mission of the African Union (AU).
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the contact, Téte António and the Malagasy official exchanged information on the current political situation in that country and which Christine Razanamahaso reported that, since October 14th, the Madagascar has registered a gradual return to institutional normality, with the Constitution of the Republic remaining in force and without any formal dissolution of state institutions.
She revealed that the Council of the Presidency for the Re-Foundation of the Republic of Madagascar with a temporary mandate of 24 months, has the mission of guaranteeing the functioning of the State, fostering an inclusive national dialogue, organizing a referendum for the adoption of a new Constitution, and defining a timetable for holding free, transparent and democratic general elections.
Christine Razanamahaso further stated that Colonel Michael Randrianirina assumed the position of acting President of the new military regime, with the objective of restoring constitutional order and restructuring the institutions of the Malagasy state.
In turn, Minister Téte António reiterated Angola’s willingness to cooperate with the African Union and the transitional authorities, with a view to supporting the ongoing political process and contributing to the return to stability and normalization of institutional life in that African island nation.
Angola, which currently holds the presidency of the African Union, is closely monitoring the evolving political situation in Madagascar, while the continental organization is preparing to send a high-level mission to support efforts toward reconciliation and the restoration of democratic order.
