Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan government has been working towards transforming Angola into a leading maritime and logistics hub in the Atlantic region, through modern ports and secure services, within the framework of international best practices to attract more direct private investment.

The statement was made by the Minister of Transport Ricardo D’Abreu on Monday in Luanda at the opening ceremony of the International Maritime Organization (IMSAS) International Audit taking place on November 3 to 10.

He considered the sea as one of the strategic assets and one of the keys to the sustainable development and economic diversification of Angola.

“The country has a coastline of more than sixteen hundred kilometers, establishing a vital link with the world through trade, energy, security and international cooperation,” the minister said.

He added that the economy currently represents one of the greatest potentials for Angola’s future, in addition to being an important source of employment, revenue and innovation, it appears as an engine for logistics, fishing, energy, shipbuilding, coastal tourism and international trade.

The head of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) audit team, Prasad Panicker, on his turn, stressed that the objective of the audit is to assess the extent to which Member States are applying IMO instruments through observation and compliance with the audit standard and general strategies.

The group will also monitor the enactment of legislation (security/environment) for ratified IMO instruments, as well as the application of systems in relation to compliance with the audit standard and ratified IMO instruments.

Among other aspects, it also includes an assessment of the extent of the Angolan coast and compliance with various obligations and responsibilities under IMO instruments.
