Africa-Press – Angola. A basic study on the hydrogen potential in Angola will be funded as from the current year, by the German government, the German Economic Delegate in Angola, Vandré Soellmeier, announced on Wednesday in Luanda.
The official was speaking during a conference on the energy partnership between Angola and Germany, promoted by the German-Angolan Hydrogen Office (H2-diplo), as part of the state visit of the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to Angola.
Without specifying the amount to be invested, he stated that the study, whose results will be presented in the first half of 2026, could be used as a central piece for the conclusion of a National Hydrogen Strategy for Angola, allowing for further development.
He explained that the initiative will be developed in partnership with the national working group created for the development of Angola’s National Hydrogen Strategy, with a view to safeguarding the interests of all national operators.
Vandré Soellmeier defended that the development of a National Hydrogen Strategy is extremely important for strengthening Angola’s initiatives in this sector in international markets, as it facilitates access to various German and European financial instruments aimed at promoting green industries.
At the time, he highlighted the growth of the energy partnership between Angola and Germany, in a shared vision aimed at guaranteeing a cleaner, safer and more accessible energy future, in line with the objectives of the global energy transition and the goals of the Paris Agreement.
He considered that Angola possesses one of the greatest potentials in Southern Africa for renewable energy generation, particularly solar and hydroelectric power.
He assured that the combination of these resources with technologies developed and optimized by Germany can transform Angola into a regional clean energy hub, capable of not only meeting its own domestic demand but also exporting green hydrogen derivatives to international markets.
To him, this path requires vision, planning and continuous investment.
In turn, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Research and Development Center (CPD) of Sonangol, Orlando da Mata, stated that the energy transition is currently unavoidable, therefore countries must develop innovative technologies and practices that guarantee a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, promoting universal access to clean energy and preserving the environment.
He believes that renewable energies are the path to decarbonization and energy sustainability, emphasizing that the energy produced and consumed needs to generate opportunities, reduce inequalities, and contribute to fairer and more sustainable growth.
In this regard, it is fundamental to strengthen the relationship between governments, companies, and scientific and technological research institutions so that the country can make secure progress in this field.
“Technology and skills for a modern energy system”, “Financing products for energy transition and beyond”, “Smart infrastructure and mining: Driving a modern and efficient sector”, and “Energy horizon: Driving a sustainable energy partnership”, are the topics under discussion in the conference.
The event takes place under the motto “Driving the industrial future through energy and decarbonization – Strengthening the energy partnership between Angola and Germany”.
It is scheduled to end and includes interventions from representatives of the Angolan Ministry of Energy and Water, as well as by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy.
