Senegalese Authorities Highlight President Lourenço'S Unifying Role

Africa-Press – Angola. The unifying statesmanlike role of Angolan President João Lourenço, who currently holds the pro tempore presidency of the African Union, was widely highlighted in Dakar during the November 11th (Angolan independence) celebrations.

During a reception offered to the Diplomatic Corps by the Angolan Embassy in Senegal, the Senegalese Minister of Industry and Commerce, Serigne Gueye Diop, speaking on behalf of the Government, praised President João Lourenço’s efforts at the head of the African Union.

The minister stated that the leadership of the Angolan Head of State has contributed to strengthening peace, cooperation, and unity on the continent.

Serigne Gueye Diop emphasized that the vision defended by João Lourenço fully coincides with Senegal’s commitment to a united, interconnected Africa capable of asserting itself with one voice on the international stage.

Regarding bilateral relations, the minister highlighted the excellent level of cooperation between Angola and Senegal, based on a solid foundation of mutual esteem and African solidarity.

He also reiterated Senegal’s full willingness to strengthen and diversify ties with Angola, in a spirit of sincere partnership, lasting friendship, and economic complementarity. “It would be highly beneficial for our two countries to boost the volume of trade, which is already progressing well, in order to better leverage the considerable economic potential existing on both sides,” he stated.

Among the promising sectors, he highlighted air services, which have assumed an increasing role in bilateral cooperation. The minister recalled that the draft bilateral agreement on air services, currently under review by both governments, should establish a favorable legal framework for the opening of regular flights between Dakar and Luanda.

This measure, he said, will strengthen air connectivity, facilitate the mobility of people and goods, and stimulate trade, tourism, and investment between the two countries.

He further added that cooperation between Angola and Senegal has been fruitful and promising, making it essential to fully exploit the numerous unexplored opportunities within the framework of the bilateral partnership, especially in a global context marked by rapid technological transformations, complex security challenges, geopolitical realignments, and significant climate issues.

The reception for the Diplomatic Corps, led by the Angolan ambassador to Senegal, Adão Pinto, was attended by diplomats accredited to the country, businesspeople, academics, and members of the Angolan community. In his speech, the ambassador reviewed the historical relations between the two countries and highlighted the significance of the celebration of National Independence.
