Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Minister of Transport, Ricardo de Abreu, defended on Tuesday in Luanda the creation of integrated policies for the liberalization of African airspace, with the objective of forming the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).
According to the official, the liberalization of the “African skies” constitutes an economic, operational and geopolitical imperative, because the current market situation in the airline sector harms the continental economy, particularly passengers, who struggle with low supply and expensive routes.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 57th Annual General Assembly of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), which took place on the 1st and 2nd of this month, in the Angolan capital (Luanda), he said that the numerous initiatives on the subject should not remain in a report, but rather in concrete and progressive actions.
In this regard, he reiterated that Angola maintains its commitment to the progressive and responsible implementation of SAATM, aligning regulators, operators and infrastructures to guarantee healthy competition and systemic efficiency.
Regarding the two-day African Airlines Assembly, he said that it served, once again, to show that the reinvention of the business model is an urgent need, particularly with regard to fleet management, operational efficiency and financial discipline.
For the minister, the external circumstances of fuels and their costs, regulatory and tax pressures can no longer justify continental immobility, as the industry requires adaptation and execution permanently focused on excellence.
He highlighted that the 57th Assembly of African Airlines once again demonstrated Angola’s path of transformation, rigor and strategic ambition with a focus on SAATAM.
He highlighted that the Angolan Government will continue to invest in human capital, technical capacity, modernization of processes and strengthening the regulatory framework, because it understands that aviation is an economic sector with added value that contributes to the creation of qualified jobs and projects the country to the world.
According to the Minister of Transport, the transformation depends on Africans themselves, from regulators, operators, public institutions, international partners, sector workers, decision-makers and experts, rather than waiting for external changes.
