Angola Strengthens Resilient Agri-Food Systems for Africa

Angola’s representative to the United Nations agencies in Rome (Italy), Josefa Sacko, highlighted on Tuesday, in that city, the renewed focus on sustainability, inclusion, resilience and effectiveness as the path to accelerating progress and strengthening resilient agri-food systems for Africa.

When speaking at the 179th session of the FAO Council, the diplomat highlighted that Angola reinforced its commitment to efficiency, focusing on reducing costs, optimizing time and improving the effectiveness of processes.

According to a press release, Josefa Sacko urged FAO to prioritize integrated approaches aimed at sustainable increases in agricultural productivity.

In presenting Angola’s position, she highlighted the transformation of agri-food systems, the strengthening of family farming and value chains, the promotion of climate resilience and Risk Management as essential points that deserve greater budgetary and programmatic attention.

She also recalled that Angola, in particular, faces challenges such as chronic drought in the south of the country, social inclusion and gender equality, international partnerships and cooperation, and efficiency and transparency in resource management.

She highlighted that Angola’s experience reinforces the need to promote innovative practices and climate-smart agriculture and innovation, in the face of climate change, guaranteeing a safe food and nutritional future for the populations.

According to the diplomat, Angola also defends a budgetary allocation that ensures economic and social inclusion, including women, young people and vulnerable communities, such as fishermen and pastoralists, a vital component of the approach to agri-food systems, inclusion in planning and implementation processes, brings diverse perspectives and strengthens collaboration between different sectors and interest groups.

Josefa Sacko said that the country recognizes the value of multisectoral partnerships, between governments, civil society, the private sector and international partners, such as IFAD and WFP, to leverage funds and knowledge.

She added that initiatives such as EU-funded FRESAN in Angola offer valuable lessons in the fight against hunger and vulnerability.
