Africa-Press – Angola. The French Republic has requested Angola’s support for its candidacy for the presidency of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), based in The Hague, Netherlands, according to a statement from the Angolan Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the capital and headquarters of the African Union (AU).
The request was made official by the French ambassador to the Netherlands and candidate for the 2026-2036 term, François Alabrune, during a meeting on Wednesday with the Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the AU, Miguel Bembe.
According to a press release, the meeting took place at the Angolan Diplomatic Mission in Addis Ababa, during which the two diplomats exchanged views on preparations for the 39th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled for February 14 and 15, 2026.
They also discussed Angola’s performance in the Presidency of the African Union for the 2025-2026 period, as well as the country’s priorities in the continental body’s Peace and Security Council for the 2024-2026 term.
On that occasion, the French diplomat formally requested Angola’s support for his candidacy for the presidency of the International Court of Justice, considering his diplomatic and legal experience, as well as France’s involvement in strengthening multilateralism and international justice.
In turn, Ambassador Miguel Bembe highlighted the high level of political, diplomatic, and cooperation relations between Angola and France, noting that the request was received with attention and will be submitted to the competent national authorities for analysis..
The meeting was also attended by the French Ambassador to Ethiopia and to the African Union, Alexis Lamek, and represented another step in deepening bilateral relations between the two countries, emphasizing the shared commitment to multilateralism, international justice, and the strengthening of the AU.
The International Court of Justice, based in the Hague, is the main judicial body of the United Nations (UN), responsible for resolving disputes between States and issuing advisory opinions based on international law.
The judges of the ICJ are elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the UN.
