Vice President Discusses Young Women'S Protection with Magistrates

Africa-Press – Angola. The Vice-President of Angola, Esperança da Costa, addressed on Tuesday in Luanda, issues related to the protection of young women and children during a meeting with Judges and Presidents of Constitutional Courts from African countries and Brazil.

The magistrates are in Angola participating in the Constitutional Forum on the Rights and Guarantees of Young African Women and Children.

Speaking to the press at the end of the meeting, the presiding judge of the Constitutional Court of Angola, Laurinda Prazeres, said the Vice-President reiterated the country’s commitment, both institutionally and personally, to promoting gender equality and defending the rights of women and children.

According to the magistrate, the Vice-President highlighted the progress made in the country in the field of gender equality, stating that Angola presents good examples and positive references in the fight against inequalities.

The magistrate stressed that the approach to protecting young women and children, in different aspects, is a fundamental and urgent issue for Angolan society and, in particular, for families.

“All African countries are aware of the ratified protocols and the constitutional promises made. We have found that Angola, compared to other countries, has a constitutional framework with quite well-defined rules regarding the protection of young women and children,” the magistrate said.

The meeting is part of an international seminar aimed at debating and defending issues related to the protection of young women and children, with the participation of more than 20 African countries and jurisdictions, in addition to Brazil.

The judge-counselor of the Constitutional Court of Mali, Maître Maliki Ibrahim, on his turn, underscored that to combat violence against young people and women, it is essential to create a solid and effective legal framework.

“Women are the mothers of humanity and young people are the future,” he said, emphasizing the importance of constitutional courts ensuring the effective application of protection norms.

The magistrate also highlighted that Mali is committed to defending human rights, with particular attention to the protection of women and children.

On the occasion, retired South African judge Albie Sachs praised Angola’s contribution and sacrifice in the liberation process of South Africa.

The judge expressed satisfaction with the development recorded in the Angolan capital, comparing it positively with the reality of about 20 years ago and that he appreciated Angolan classical music.

He stated that women deserve trust, education, and protection, because without these conditions it will not be possible to liberate the African continent from poverty, conflict, and war.
