Africa-Press – Angola. The President of East Timor, José Ramos-Horta, conveyed on Monday (23) in Geneva, Switzerland, greetings of friendship, fraternity, and solidarity to his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, highlighting his leadership in the African Union.

The message was delivered to the minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, during a meeting held at the work of the High-Level Segment of the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council, in which both entities are participating.

On the occasion, José Ramos-Horta expressed his appreciation of President João Lourenço leadership, praising the determined and balanced way in which he has conducted the Presidency of the African Union, as well as the continuous efforts he has made for peace, stability, and security on the African continent.

The Timorese Head of State emphasized the importance of strengthening multilateralism and cooperation between states that share common values of sovereignty, self-determination, and the promotion of human rights—principles that guide both Timor-Leste and Angola internationally.

Angola and East Timor maintain historical and politico-diplomatic ties based on solidarity between peoples who share experiences of struggle for self-determination and the consolidation of the rule of law.

Within the framework of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), the two states have cooperated closely in promoting the Portuguese language, in political and diplomatic coordination, and in defending common interests in multilateral forums.

Since 2025, the diplomatic presence has been strengthened with the inauguration of the Angolan embassy in Dili, aiming to strengthen economic, political, and cultural ties.

In July 2024, the two countries signed three cooperation agreements in Luanda, covering political consultations, diplomatic studies, and visa exemptions for official passports, witnessed by Presidents João Lourenço and José Ramos-Horta.

The occasion in Geneva reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to continue deepening bilateral relations, strengthening South-South cooperation, and actively contributing to peace, sustainable development, and regional and international stability.
