Angola and Portugal reinforced, Wednesday (15), in Luanda, the mechanisms to relaunch military cooperation in the fields of training, Health and other sectors necessary to strengthen the “extraordinary bilateral relationship” between the Armed Forces of the two countries, following of the political orientations of both Governments.

Military delegations from the two countries, led by the heads of the General Staff, General Egídio de Sousa Santos (Angola), and Admiral António Ribeiro (Portugal), evaluated the results of cooperation achieved so far and set “more ambitious” goals for the future. .

In the bilateral framework, the Angolan and Portuguese Defense ministers signed, yesterday, in Lisbon, the Framework Program for cooperation in the field of Defense between the two States.

“It is now up to us to materialize these agreements on the ground, with concrete actions, as well as to deepen and identify a set of lines of action that allow the objectives to be achieved”, Admiral António Ribeiro told the press, at the end of official talks between the military delegations. of the two countries, which took place at the premises of the Ministry of National Defense and Homeland Veterans.

António Ribeiro considered the bilateral military cooperation “extraordinary”, stressing that in terms of training it covers the operational aspects of planning, programming and cyber defence, in addition to the health sector, with the areas of surveillance, surveillance and maritime rescue.

Piracy In The Gulf Of Guinea

The same official said that, as part of the fight against terrorism and piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, Portugal has stationed a patrol ship in São Tomé and Príncipe which, in collaboration with the archipelago’s coast guard, fights the “perverse phenomena” in the region. .

As for the surveillance and inspection of international waters and combating terrorism and piracy, he said that Portugal has also occasionally sent warships and scientific ships to friendly countries, as well as carrying out missions annually with Air Force aircraft in the Gulf of Guinea. .

The admiral therefore requested greater collaboration between the countries of the region to prevent and combat piracy and terrorism that threaten the integrity and security of the states bordering the Atlantic.

The FAA Chief of Staff said he had received guarantees from his Portuguese counterpart to develop the Angolan military industry. “Portugal is a secular country with staff capable and willing to help Angola in this area”, he said, adding that the country has, in addition to Portugal, the support of Spain, in the installation of naval shipyards to repair Navy ships. .

Angola, noting that the project “is in progress”. Egídio de Sousa Santos also spoke of the participation of Portugal’s EMG in the formation of the country’s Special Forces.
