Africa-Press – Angola. The holding of the 147th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (UIP), in Luanda, from the 23rd to the 27th, with a focus on promoting peace and democracy, marked the political news of the week in the last seven days.
The event, about parliamentary action, peace and strong institutions, brought together over 1,500 delegates from 130 countries and was praised by the organization’s outgoing president, Duarte Pacheco, “for the brilliant way” in which it was organized.
Parliamentarians, among other matters, adopted the Declaration of Luanda, which highlights the active role in governance in the social version, recognizing the inseparable link between populations and institutions.
I also highlight the president of the Parliament of Tanzania, Tulia Ackson, who was elected the 31st president of the IPU, during the 147th General Assembly, with 172 votes in a single round.
Also noteworthy is the last day of the visit of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, where he completed an official two-day visit, at the invitation of his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto.
In compliance with the visit’s agenda, João Lourenço met with William Ruto, with whom he discussed issues of bilateral interest, with emphasis on strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
Following this, the Statesmen witnessed the signing of 11 legal instruments, to strengthen cooperation in the fields of health, agriculture, environment, mineral resources, oil and gas, tourism, telecommunications, Information Technologies and social communication, transport and maritime cooperation, commerce and industry, youth, among others.
The political news was also marked by the audiences granted by the Angolan Head of State to dignitaries from several countries present at the IPU General Assembly, namely the presidents of the parliaments of Portugal, Côte d Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau, respectively Augusto Santos Silva, Adama Bictogo and Domingos Simões Pereira.
He also received a delegation of Japanese parliamentarians, as well as the ambassadors of Egypt, Mohamed Safuat, of Poland, Piorr Mysliwiec, and of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Jo Pyong Chol, all at the end of their mission.
It is also important to highlight the hearing given to the special representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the African Union (AU), Parfait Anyanga.
On the other hand, João Lourenço dismissed Gilson Carmelino and Anica de Sousa from the positions of vice-governors of the provinces of Luanda and Namibe, respectively.
In another decree, he appointed as deputy governors of Luanda for the Economic Sector, Jorge Miguêns Augusto, of the province of Malanje for the Political, Social and Economic Sector, Franco Cazembe Mufinda, while for Namibe, Abel do Rosário Kapitango.
It is also relevant to the meeting of the Council of Ministers (CM) that considered, for submission to the National Assembly, the proposed National Security Law.
The document aims to conform the current organization and functioning of the security system to the principles and standards established in the Constitution of the Republic of Angola.
It also takes into account the national and international context, thus guaranteeing national independence and sovereignty, defense and territorial integrity, the democratic rule of law, the security of populations and their property, as well as the protection of national heritage.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Hélder Pitta Groz, stood out when he announced, soon, the holding of auctions and sale at public auction of real estate assets, seized as part of the ongoing fight against corruption in the country, since 2017.
The importance of greater investment in the agricultural sector, especially family farming, which has shown positive signs in recent times, was reiterated by the MPLA Political Bureau, at the IV Ordinary Meeting of this body, marking the political week.
