Africa-Press – Angola. The Passenger Terminal of the Port of Luanda was consumed by fire, on Saturday night, as a result of a road accident.
The fire consumed an area of 430 square metres, affecting ticketing services, a café/bar, a pantry and sanitary facilities.
Despite the violence of the accident and the total destruction of the vehicle, the four occupants left with only a few injuries.
According to a note from the administration of the Port of Luanda, the accident occurred around 9:30 pm, and the flames started in the vehicle that crashed and reached part of the passenger concentration zone of the said maritime terminal.
At the moment, the situation is under control and the shift work teams, as well as the goods needed to guarantee the terminal’s operability, are out of danger.
After the place was on fire, the situation was quickly brought under control by the Civil Protection and Fire Service.
The Provincial Governor of Luanda, Manuel Homem, was also at the site to observe the situation.
The note stresses that a multidisciplinary team made up of members of the different specialties of the Ministry of the Interior, the Port of Luanda and Sécil-Maritima have been working since the first hours of the occurrence to assess the causes of the accident, calculate the material damage and determine the measures to be taken for the recovery of the affected part of the terminal.
The Maritime Passenger Terminal at the Port of Luanda occupies a total area of 4,158.76 square meters, where commercial services, shops, restaurants are provided, in addition to the entire process related to the boarding and disembarking of passengers on the connection Luanda, Soyo, cabin and vice versa.
