Africa-Press – Angola. The current president of UNITA, Adalberto Costa Júnior, formalized his re-candidacy for the leadership of Angola’s largest opposition party, Friday in Luanda.
The formalization, through his representative, consisted of submitting a dossier with the statutory and regulatory requirements for the purpose to the Mandates Committee of the 14th Congress of the political party.
In statements to the press after the event, Adalberto Costa Júnior emphasized that the candidacy follows all the precepts required by the Mandates Committee. “We came here to reaffirm our commitment to deepening internal democracy within UNITA and, above all, to affirm the democratic rule of law in Angola,” the politician declared.
In turn, the candidate’s representative, Navita Ngolo, said that the party leader’s re-election can be justified by his experience in his first term and his ability to mobilize civil society. “We assume the responsibility of presenting his re-election so that we can continue this path of uniting all the forces of Angolan society, to bring about the change so desired by the Angolan people, especially in 2027,” she emphasized.
When asked about possible competing candidacies, she assured that the process remains open to all members who meet the statutory requirements. “Candidacies are open; UNITA members are free”.
“We believe that more candidates will emerge”, she stated.
Candidates for the election of UNITA’s next president, to take place during the party’s conclave, will be submitted until October 22nd. The 14th Ordinary Congress is scheduled for next November.
