AGT denounces growth in fuel smuggling in Luau

Africa-Press – Angola. The head of the Luau Customs Delegation, Hortêncio Yembe, denounced, this Thursday, the involvement of fuel retailers in the region, in the practice of smuggling the product, in collaboration with foreign citizens.

The official who spoke to press, informed that many fuel pumps of national citizens are leased to expatriates, who facilitate the transport, by means of bicycles and motorbikes, of large quantities of the product, using wireways.

He exemplified that only in the last 30 days

the management committee of the customs post, made up of the General Tax Administration (AGT), Fiscal and Customs Police, Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and the Border Guard, seized 23 thousand liters of fuel destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) .

He reported that the number of fuel pumps in that municipality is greater, compared to the number of cars.

“The municipality of Luau has close to 27 active and functional fuel pumps, a larger number than the cities of Luena (Moxico) and Dundo (Linda-Norte) together”, he emphasized.

Hortencio Yembe reiterated that smuggling is a phenomenon that continues to put State security at risk, as fuel is a strategic resource for the country’s revenue.

The municipality of Luau, which is 334 kilometers east of Luena, the capital of Moxico province, has an estimated population of 1,112,000 inhabitants and about 12 kilometers of border with the DRC.
