Africa-Press – Angola. Ambassador António Egídio de Sousa Santos, representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to the Central African Republic (CAR) and head of the African Union Mission for Central and East Africa, was honoured Tuesday, in Bangui, by Prime Minister Félix Moloua, to the rank of “Commander” of the National Orders, at the end of his mission.

The distinction on an “exceptional basis” took place in the Central African Primatura noble hall, in compliance with an Order of the President of the Central African Republic, Grand Master of the Order, and marked the end of an 18-month term at the service of stability in this country, as well as the recognition of his commitment and efforts to the ongoing peace process in the country.

On the occasion, the Prime Minister of the CAR, Félix Moloua, highlighted his active commitment to the processes of dialogue, disarmament and reconstruction of institutions, in close collaboration with the country bilateral and multilateral partners, whose diplomatic action has contributed, in particular, to the strengthening of the mechanisms of consultation between the parties interested in the peace process.

He praised “the constant and constructive commitment of the African Union through its representative” and reaffirmed the willingness of the Central African authorities to maintain a close dialogue with the continental organization, a key player in supporting the country recovery.

The Angolan diplomat expressed his gratitude to the highest Central African authorities for the quality of cooperation maintained throughout his mission.

Ambassador António Egídio de Sousa Santos also spoke of the ongoing process on disarmament, demobilization, reintegration, repatriation and monitoring of the political agreement for peace and reconciliation in the CAR (DDRR/SAPPR-RCA) and the implementation of the commitments made in the recent peace agreement signed in N’Djamena between the government and the two important armed groups.

The Angolan diplomat spoke of the role that the continental organization played alongside the Central African government so that the leaders of the 3R (Return, Reclamation and Rehabilitation) and UPC (Union for Peace in the Central African Republic) movements signed, on July 10, 2025, the historic agreement that aimed to end hostilities and start a lasting peace process in the country.

António Egídio de Sousa Santos said he will keep “warm memories” of his time in the Central African Republic, a country he says he learned to love for the “resilience and generosity of its people”.

“I leave with a deep sense of satisfaction, honoured to be able to accompany the efforts of national reconciliation alongside the Central African people”, he said after the ceremony.

In memory of his visit to the Central African Republic, the Angolan diplomat also received a symbolic gift, including an object carved in ebony wood, which bears witness to local art, offered by the Prime Minister, Félix Moloua.
