Africa-Press – Angola. The outgoing ambassador of Angola to Brazil, Florêncio de Almeida, was decorated, in Brasília, with the Grand Cross of the Order of Rio Branco, the highest distinction awarded to foreign citizens.

The distinction, named after the patron saint of Brazilian diplomacy, José Maria da Silva Paranhos Júnior, was awarded by President Lula da Silva, in recognition of the diplomat’s dedication and work on Brazilian soil.

According to a press note, which press had access to this Sunday, Florêncio de Almeida thanked the honor, stressing that he gave his best for the growth of bilateral relations.

On his turn, Carlos Duarte, secretary for Africa and the Middle East of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, said that the decoration is the recognition of the Brazilian nation, for the services, virtues and achievements of the Angolan diplomat.

The ceremony, which took place at the Itamaraty Palace, was attended by various entities of the Brazilian Government, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited in this South American country.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of this farewell activity, Ambassador Florêncio de Almeida was honored by the Group of African Ambassadors in Brazil, with similar actions planned for this week by the Apostolic Nuncio, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and by the Groups of Ambassadors of the CPLP and SADC in Brazil.
