Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s ambassador to the United States of America (USA), Agostinho Van-Dúnem, praised the Biden Administration’s initiative in mobilizing investment to boost the process of diversifying the national economy and promoting regional trade.
Agostinho Van-Dúnem was speaking during a working meeting with the Interim Special Coordinator of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure Investment (PGI), of the US Department of State, Helaina Matza.
According to a press release from the Angolan Embassy in the USA, the meeting’s agenda was dominated by the “Corredor do Lobito dossier”, which has substantial involvement from the North American Government and the European Union.
The communication states that during the meeting the Angolan ambassador asked about the expected conclusion of the project’s economic and financial feasibility studies, given its scope and social and market dimension, capable of positively changing the map of the economy of Angola, Zambia and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Agostinho Van-Dúnem also asked that studies on the project take care to include local businesspeople.
The interim coordinator stressed that, once completed, the corridor will be an important logistical means for transporting agricultural resources and ensuring food security for countries in the region.
Recently, the USA announced investments in the construction of road infrastructure (metallic bridges), valued at USD 360 million, and USD 250 million made available by a consortium for the development of the Lobito Corridor, Benguela province.
The portfolio also includes an investment in the renewable energy sector, currently valued at USD 900 million.
Angola and the United States of America established formal diplomatic relations in 1993.
Angola is the US’s third largest trading partner in Sub-Saharan Africa, mainly due to oil exports. The two countries cooperate in several areas, with emphasis on trade, finance, energy, manufacturing, security, health and justice.
Trade between Angola and the United States of America reached, until November 2019, around 1.4 billion dollars.
