Africa-Press – Angola. Forty inmates serving sentences at Yabi Prison, south of Cabinda, were released this Friday (10th), under the amnesty law.

Previously convicted of various crimes, including theft, robbery and serious bodily harm, with sentences of between one (1) and eight (8) years in prison, this number joins the 73, among staff of the National Police and the Angolan Armed Forces ( FAA), who in the Preventive Penitentiary in the municipality of Cacongo were benefited by the same Law, in December 2022.

In the act on Friday, which took place at Cadeia do Yabi, the Chief Judge of the Cabinda Court, Domingos Wilson, reminded the inmates of the importance of the Amnesty Law as a juridical-legal instrument, through which the Angolan State gave a strong signal of trust and opportunity to all defendants in Angola.

For the judge, the Amnesty Law allows citizens to be restored to freedom under certain conditions, who will thus be able to contribute to the development of the country, reintegrated into society and their families.

“Prisons are a limited space for the training of adults, not being a depository for men, but places to be able to work minds towards changes in behavior, thus creating the conditions for a healthy society”.

In turn, Governor Mara Quiosa, who witnessed the act of handing over the releases, appealed to the beneficiaries of the Amnesty Law to change their behavior and prevent them from committing acts punishable by law again.

He recalled that the deprivation of liberty, which many experienced during this period, ended up postponing many dreams and projects. Therefore, he underlined that, they have a sovereign opportunity to do things differently and better, to continue to abstain from practices and acts liable to be punished by law.

Cabinda province has three prisons, Yabi, Civil Prison and the preventive penitentiary of Cacongo.
