AN commissions approve maintenance of Angolan military component in Mozambique

Africa-Press – Angola. The members of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd commissions of the National Assembly (AN) yesterday afternoon unanimously approved the Joint Opinion Report and the Draft Resolution, in particular, on the Request of the President of the Republic for the Maintenance of the Angolan member of the SADC Standby Force for the Southern Africa Mission in Mozambique.

Following the previous term of three months, resulting from the authorization of the National Assembly (AN) to the holder of the Executive Power, to send this troop to Mozambique, in 2022, the deputies considered the need for them to remain in Mozambican territory.

The deputies’ decision responds to a request by the President of the Republic, to AN, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Angolan Armed Forces.

The two documents were approved by 31 votes in favour, none against and an equal number of abstentions, and it will be debated and voted on at the next plenary session of the National Assembly, on the 29th of this month.

The Mission is made up of human means (20 men), material one (1) aircraft and financial means (USD 1,174,307).

The joint meeting of the 1st (Constitutional and Legal Affairs), 2nd (Security, Internal Order, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland) and 3rd (External Relations, International Cooperation and Angolan Communities Abroad) of the AN resulted from the fact that these are the compotent components due to the matter under discussion.

Concerned about the prevailing insecurity situation in Mozambique, with terrorist acts perpetrated against civilians, women and children in some districts of Cabo Delegado province, SADC held, on 30 June 2021, the Extraordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government .

The aforementioned Summit aimed to assess the current situation in Mozambique, having decided to send components of the force in State of Alert of which Angola is part.
