According to a press release sent this Monday, the appointment was formalized through a letter signed by the general secretary of the UIP, Martin Chungong, and addressed to the president of the AN.

“Preparations for the Conference of Speakers of Parliaments will be led by a preparatory committee made up of around 20 parliamentary leaders, a selected number of representatives from the IPU Executive Committee, a senior representative from the European Parliament and a senior representative from the Secretary-General of the UN”, the document reads.

In the letter, the UIP invites the AN leader to the first meeting of the Preparatory Commission, at the UIP headquarters, in Geneva, Switzerland, from 16 to 17 May 2024.

According to the organization, the conference of speakers and three more meetings of the preparatory committee are also scheduled for July 30th.

The committee will meet four times during the 18-month preparatory period, with the fourth and final meeting taking place on the eve of the conference.

It clarifies that at the recently held 148th Assembly of the IPU, following consultations with member parliaments and geopolitical groups, the composition of the Preparatory Committee for the 2025 Conference of Presidents of Parliament was approved by the governing bodies of the IPU.

The IPU explains that the conferences are organized in close cooperation with the United Nations and aim to reinforce the parliamentary dimension in the UN’s work and bridge the democratic divide in international relations.
