Africa-Press – Angola. The Joint Opinion Report and the Draft Resolution on the sending of an Angolan military contingent to the Democratic Republic of Congo, within the scope of the Peacekeeping Force, were approved this Wednesday, in particular, by the National Assembly.

The documents were approved with 31 favorable votes, none against and no abstention by the deputies of the 1st (Constitutional and Legal Affairs), 2nd (Security, Internal Order, Former Combatants and Veterans of the Fatherland) and 3rd (Foreign Relations, International Cooperation and Angolan Communities Abroad) commissions of the National Assembly (AN), without major discussions.

The Request for Authorization from the President of the Republic to send a contingent of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) from the peacekeeping operations component aims to ensure the process of cantonment of the M23 military forces, in the east of the DRC.

Speaking at the session, the Minister of State and Head of the Military Household of the President of the Republic, Francisco Pereira Furtado, said that this need stems from the fact that the Armed Forces of the DRC and the M23 are belligerent, and the mediation mechanism is responsible for security and stability of cantonment areas.

In general, the objective of the Angolan mission will be to adopt the joint general plan for the resolution of the crisis in the East of the DRC, accelerate the effective implementation of the Luanda roadmap, in coordination with the Nairobi process, for the promotion of security in the eastern region of the DRC and the normalization of political and diplomatic relations with the Republic of Rwanda.

The Angolan contingent, which according to the work commissions should remain in that country for 12 months, will be made up of a battalion of the FAA and respective components, as well as financial resources estimated at AOA 11,266 million and 872,000 kwanzas, which will have to be reallocated within the budget of the Defense and Security sector.
