Africa-Press – Angola. The Republic of Angola abstained, Thursday (23), from voting on the “draft resolution A/ES-11L.7” entitled Principles of the Charter of the United Nations Underlying a Comprehensive, Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine .
The information is expressed in a note released by the Institutional Communication and Press Services of the Permanent Mission of Angola to the UN in New York.
The document, which press had access to today (Friday), informs that the draft resolution was adopted during the 11th Special Emergency Session of the UN General Assembly, with 141 votes in favour, seven against and 32 abstentions.
In explaining the vote, the note continues, before the vote, the Permanent Representative of the Mission of Angola to the United Nations, extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador, Maria de Jesus Ferreira, highlighted the fact that the draft resolution does not reflect the contribution of all States Members.
The diplomat declared that Angola understands that “operative paragraph 9 is not conducive to the creation of an environment conducive to the start of a peaceful negotiation”.
However, the ambassador considered that the document represents a positive step in the efforts that have been made by the International Community that show clear signs of support for the process of seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict, in the sense of bringing the parties closer to a lasting peace in the Eastern Europe region.
“The Republic of Angola defends the notion of accountability for crimes committed by either party. However, we do not think it is the right time to have a gender paragraph in the resolution so as not to undermine the efforts and initiatives of the Secretary General to promote a lasting and comprehensive peace between the two countries”, he stressed.
Maria de Jesus Ferreira concluded her speech by reiterating that Angola is of the opinion that the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine can only be resolved through dialogue, having stressed that the United Nations General Assembly must maintain its interest in preserving the principles of peaceful coexistence among member states.
