Africa-Press – Angola. The Governments of Angola and Japan are preparing to sign new legal instruments in the fields of space technology, health, transport and energy.
According to the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, who provided the information, this Sunday, in Tokyo (Japan), the signature is part of the visit that President João Lourenço is making to the Asian country.
Speaking to the press, minister Téte António said that the visit of the Angolan statesman was economic in nature, with emphasis on issues related to the management of Angola’s debt with Japan, the amount of which he did not specify.
The issue of talks on debt management, continued the minister, is an initiative proposed by the Japanese authorities, “in the context of the debt contracted with Japan by several African countries”.
The head of Angolan diplomacy also referred to the importance of holding the Angola/Japan economic forum, to take place on Monday (13), a session that will be attended by President João Lourenço.
Téte António recalled that negotiations are underway on the liberalization agreement for the reciprocal protection of investments between the two countries.
“It is an agreement that is taking some time, taking into account its characteristics and the difference in development between Angola and Japan”, he noted.
He considered that the relations between both countries are “rich and promising”, marked by a political will of the two Governments.
Cooperation
Angola and Japan intend to increase cooperation in the political, economic and cultural domains, especially in the process of industrialization and overcoming challenges in the areas of agriculture and the development of agribusiness, oil and mining.
Bilateral cooperation with Japan began in 1988 as Emergency Aid, via UNICEF.
After the end of the war in 2002, Japan began to carry out assistance in the areas of mine clearance, social reintegration of former soldiers and reintegration of refugees.
As part of the national reconstruction of Angola, Japan has been providing assistance, within the framework of international organizations, in segments such as food aid, as well as assistance to farmers and poverty.
Japan’s support extends to assistance with the repatriation of refugees, water supply facilities, construction of primary schools, communication network and ports.
In the health sector, since 1996, Japan has donated US$40 million for the rehabilitation and equipment of the Josina Machel Hospital, which is one of the reference hospitals in the country.
Within the scope of economic cooperation, in recent years, knowledge and experiences from Japan have been used in the areas of rice cultivation development and professional training.
