Africa-Press – Angola. Always rivals in women’s basketball, Angola and Mozambique begin this Monday, in Luanda, the “fight” for the only place in zone VI for Afrobasket`2025, to be played from the 25th of July to the 3rd of October, in Côte d`Ivoire.

In a double dose, at 6 pm, at the Cidadela Desportiva pavilion, the last of this “saga” will be on Tuesday, being the fourth and fifth clash between the contenders in recent years.

In the three previous games between them, the national team, now led by Paulo Macedo, won on two occasions, in 2021, by 70-61, and 64-61, in the 2013 Afrobasket, in Maputo, where they lost in the final precisely against Angola..

The team led by coach Nilton Marinheira, who has been in the country since Sunday, triumphed in 2017, 61-47.

This qualifying window for the continental event was also supposed to take place with representatives from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Eswatini, Zambia and Botswana, but they withdrew the day before without justification, according to the Angolan Federation of the sport. The national team, two-time African champion in 2011, in Bamako (Mali), and in 2013, in Maputo (Mozambique), with coach Anibal Moreira, will face an opponent who has so far achieved only second place in a competition of its kind, in 2013.

The refereeing team is made up of commissioner Joy Olinga (Uganda) and field judges Lydie Konan (Côte d `Ivoire), Ossan Paterne Kpawogbo (Benin) and Annie Muchenu (Zimbabwe), in challenges with free entries.

In 28 editions of Afrobasket, Senegal is the country with the most titles won (11), followed by Nigeria (9), Congo (3), Egypt (2), Angola (2), Madagascar and Mali (one each).
