Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, received, this Thursday, in Luanda, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Angola, Tsjeard Hoekstra.
According to a statement sent, the meeting served to evaluate the strengthening of bilateral cooperation, as well as to identify ways to support initiatives to promote peace and security in the Great Lakes Region.
On the occasion, the Dutch diplomat praised the participation of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in the Conference of the International Contact Group for Supporting Ongoing Regional Initiatives for Peace in the Great Lakes Region, promoted by the Clingendael Institute, on 15 October, in the city of The Hague, and expressed the willingness of the Netherlands to collaborate in the efforts undertaken by Angola to overcome the various security challenges in the Great Lakes Region, in particular, in the normalization of relations between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda.
Tsjeard Hoekstra also recognized Angola’s role in the peace process on the African continent.
In turn, Esmeralda Mendonça highlighted the relations between Angola and the Kingdom of the Netherlands and hoped that they would be more fruitful in order to make greater use of the potential that both countries have in various areas.
He subsequently reiterated Angola’s contribution to mediating some conflicts in the Great Lakes Region, and made it known that, despite the challenges, the results have been positive, as it has been possible to bring the parties together and ensure dialogue prevails over the use of weapons.
Political and diplomatic relations between Angola and the Netherlands were officially established in 1976, shortly after Angola’s independence in 1975.
Since then, both have developed cooperative ties, particularly in the economy, sustainable development, education, health and the promotion of peace and security, the document states.
