Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and the UN addressed, on Thursday, in New York, questions about the situation in the Great Lakes Region, in particular, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The situation was assessed by the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, in New York, Francisco da Cruz and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the Great Lakes Region, Huang Xia.
During the meeting, the two entities spoke about the need for coordination and complementarity of regional and international initiatives for peace in the Great Lakes Region, making a comprehensive analysis of the future engagements of all relevant parties in the process with a view to ensuring regional stability. , taking into account the approach of the electoral period in the DRC.
The special envoy informed the Angolan ambassador about the latest developments in the east of the DRC and the UN’s efforts, aiming for a lasting solution to the conflict in the Great Lakes Region, reports the Permanent Mission of Angola in New York.
For his part, Ambassador Francisco da Cruz reiterated that Angola will continue to work actively at the regional and United Nations level to ensure that the efforts made so far, particularly the Luanda Process, lead to achieving peace in the region.
Last Tuesday (17), Huang Xia participated in the Security Council meeting on the situation in the Great Lakes, where he appealed to the international community for greater support in resolving the escalation of hostilities in eastern DRC and the growing tension in the region broad of the Great Lakes.
He expressed deep concern about the worsening security situation between the DRC and Rwanda, which accuse each other of supporting armed groups within each other’s territory.
He urged the international community to provide greater humanitarian assistance and facilitate the return of displaced people to their homes, highlighting the importance of children’s education as essential for the future of the region.
In his speech, Huang Xia said that, as part of his efforts to promote peace in the region, he visited several countries, including Angola, Burundi, DRC, Rwanda and Uganda, with the aim of building trust and mobilizing partners for a peaceful solution. to the challenges of the region.
He also emphasized the importance of revitalizing the 2013 Addis Ababa Framework Agreement, which establishes the foundations for peace and security in the region.
In this perspective, he highlighted the need to give priority to diplomacy and continuous dialogue for a comprehensive solution to the challenges facing the Great Lakes Region, stating that military solutions alone would not be sufficient to establish lasting peace.
He called on all armed groups to lay down their arms and urged Congolese armed groups to participate in the disarmament and demobilization program adopted by the DRC in 2022.
