Africa-Press – Angola. An Angolan delegation on Monday addressed issues of common interest and ways to strengthen institutional cooperation with the United Nations Human Rights Council within the framework of international human rights obligations.

Led by Secretary of State for Human Rights and Citizenship Antónia Cruz Yaba, the delegation met with Mohamed Cissé-Gouro, director of the Human Rights Council (HRC) and the Treaty Mechanisms Division, on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 59th session of the UN body, which runs until July 11 at the Palais des Nations.

The Secretary of State for Human Rights and Citizenship presented the Implementation Plan for the National Strategy for the sector, as well as the main challenges facing the country in terms of human rights. She reiterated “total openness to strengthening cooperation with this United Nations body.”

In turn, Mohamed Cissé-Gouro acknowledged the importance of Angola’s work in promoting human rights.

The UN official spoke about the investments being made in the Lobito Corridor but warned of the need for greater oversight of companies’ social responsibility in implementing and realizing human rights programs and instruments.

The meeting also served to strengthen existing cooperation and build a permanent institutional dialogue on training and capacity-building for local human rights committees.

The possibility of Cissé-Gouro and Abigail Noko, the regional representative for Southern Africa, participating as speakers at the International Business and Human Rights Forum in Angola this year was discussed. A date has yet to be determined.

Angola reiterated its commitment to continuously improving freedom of the press and expression as fundamental rights of citizenship.
