Angola and USA sign new legal instrument

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola and the United States of America (USA), signed, Friday, in Washington, a new legal instrument that will boost their bilateral relations and reinforce cooperation within the scope of common interest.

Representing both countries, the instrument was signed by the Angolan ambassador to the United States, Agostinho Van-Dúnem, and the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Molly Phee.

The document will allow the spouses of diplomats serving in both countries to carry out paid professional activity.

With six articles, the document will also allow people dependent on official employees of both parties, who perform functions in the other party’s territory, to be authorized to work on a reciprocal basis after obtaining the appropriate authorization.

The agreement indicates that any dependent, at least 16 years of age, whose accreditation is accepted by the receiving State as a direct family member of a member of a diplomatic mission, international organization or a consular post of the State of origin, can obtain authorization, within 45 days, and without paying any fees.

The document is the result of a long process of negotiations between the two countries and will create the objective conditions that will allow diplomats’ spouses to carry out professional activities in the United States of America and in Angola while the diplomatic mission is ongoing.

On the occasion, Ambassador Agostinho Van-Dúnem took the opportunity to thank all the support that the American authorities have provided to the Angolan diplomatic mission to make the work of one of its most important African partners easier.

He said that the new legal instrument represents a solid commitment to strengthening relations between the two governments.

Angola and the United States of America established formal diplomatic relations in 1993.
