Africa-Press – Angola. Angola made a commitment Tuesday at the headquarters of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva (Switzerland) to be bound by the Marrakesh Treaty and to work hard to adhere to the Madrid Protocol on the protection of trademarks.
In addition, the country is also bound by the Treaty on Intellectual Property (IP), Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge, according to a press release.
According to the statement, the decision was announced by the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Innovation, Alice de Ceita e Almeida, during her intervention in the general debate of the 66th series of meetings of the assemblies of WIPO member states, which are taking place from 8 to 17 July in Geneva.
The head of the Angolan delegation at the event said that Angola is a party to the Paris Convention and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), and was working hard to join the Madrid Protocol, the Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge, as well as the Berne and Rome Conventions.
The official said Angola has implemented the industrial property automation system (IPAS) and will launch the IP for Youth Innovation Project in 2024.
According to Alice de Ceita e Almeida, the country has already started activities within the scope of the support package for the graduation process made available by WIPO to the Least Developed Countries and has launched actions aimed at economic diversification and the guarantee of IP rights, involving different sectors, with awareness-raising campaigns.
The Secretary of State emphasized the vital role of Intellectual Property (IP) in the link between knowledge-producing institutions, the productive sector and the government, which is considered to be a fundamental element that contributes to socio-economic development.
“It’s important to invest in the creation of technology-based companies and the transfer and commercialization of technology. Angola is building the Luanda Science and Technology Park, with the aim of promoting innovation, strengthening the national science, technology and innovation system, which will have an impact on the Global Innovation Index ranking,” she said.
The Marrakesh Treaty is an international agreement aimed at facilitating access to published works for people who are blind, visually impaired or have other reading difficulties.
It allows these people to have access to books and other materials in accessible formats, such as braille, audio or enlarged text, both in their own countries and in other countries that have ratified the treaty.
The treaty is an important milestone in the fight for the inclusion of people with disabilities, ensuring that they have equal access to information and culture through works in accessible formats.
