Africa-Press – Angola. Angola will host, for the first time, a professional golf tournament, on the 11th and 13th of the current year, at Campo do Resort Mangais, located in Barra do Kwanza, in Luanda, organized in partnership with the Senior Sunshine Tour.
According to the statement, signed by the executive director of that complex, António Louro, more than 60 amateur golfers will be able to compete in the competition alongside invited international athletes.
“Amateur players will have the opportunity to play together with professionals, thus providing experiences and opportunities that, for many, will be a first time”, reads the document.
The note also mentions that, on Saturday and Sunday, the professionals present will participate in several actions to promote the sport. Likewise, the program includes a golf clinic with the schools of Morro dos Veados (Saturday), Golungo Alto and Barra do Kwanza (Sunday).
On both days, activities related to culture and tourism are also scheduled.
Professionals finish their participation on the 13th. Among the guests, 25 senior golfers from South Africa stand out, some with several titles in European tournaments.
Among the professionals, two English golfers, one French, two Zimbabweans and an equal number of Angolans are expected, with emphasis on Professor António Sobrinho, one of the candidates to win the competition, given his experience in international competitions.
The organization expects the tournament to have considerable attendance. Access will be free and visitors, duly accredited, will be able to follow the competition with the players of their choice.
It is the intention of the organizers that the event serve as a springboard to publicize the tourist potential of Angola and, for that reason, it appeals to the presence of all, with greater emphasis on sports lovers.
“The event will have a worldwide projection and, as such, will be the subject of relevant media exposure, which will promote Angola and its sport across borders. The media will have the right to free transit and access throughout the course of the competition”.
This will be the second international event that the country will host since the beginning of the year. Last April, the same venue hosted the Region V African Championship, with participation from Angola, South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
The Angolan team was represented by António Marçal, António Luife, Nito Pedro Paulo, and captained and technically guided by António Sobrinho. The National Team finished in the penultimate position in the most important event in the southern region of the continent, in charge of the African Golf Association,
South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia took the top spots on the podium, in that order.
Angola hosted the event as part of the golf development project outlined by the Angolan Federation of the sport (FAG).
At the time, speaking to JA, the president of the Federation Almir Soares said that the competition with unique characteristics should be an excellent “tool” for promoting the sport, tourism and the image of Angola abroad.
FAG considers it important to involve governmental structures and the media, as they are fundamental for the execution and success of the same, as well as the support of brands and companies.
