Africa-Press – Angola. Angola hosts, this Tuesday, the summit of Heads of State and Government of the political and economic regions of Africa, aiming at coordinating efforts for the pacification of the African continent, in particular the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The inter-regional meeting is part of the deliberations of the XI extraordinary summit of Heads of State of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (CIRGL) held on the 3rd of this month, in Luanda, on an initiative of the President of Angola, João Lourenço.
Among others, the mini-summit in Luanda considered it urgent, with the involvement of the African Union and the UN, to improve the coordination and operationalization of the monitoring mechanism for the implementation of the ceasefire and the withdrawal of the M23 from the occupied territories in the DRC.
Tuesday’s event was preceded by a meeting of ministers from countries of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (IRGL) and the East African Communities (COA), Economic of Central African States (CEEAC) and for Development of Southern Africa (SADC).
At the opening of the meeting, the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, said that the summit aims at harmonizing regional commitments, in order to avoid duplication of efforts and optimize initiatives and resources.
He reiterated Angola’s commitment to continue to support peace efforts in the region, favoring the peaceful and negotiated resolution of the conflict.
The minister stressed that Angola, as acting president of the CIRGL, as Champion for Peace and Reconciliation of the African Union and as a mediator, has carried out a series of initiatives to ease tensions between the DRC and Rwanda.
The aforementioned initiatives, he added, resulted, among other aspects, in the adoption of the Luanda Roadmap and the Joint Action Plan for the Resolution of the Security Crisis in the East of the DRC and the normalization of relations between the DRC and Rwanda.
Several Heads of State and Government or their representatives are expected to participate in this summit.
