Africa-Press – Angola. Angola participated in the ECOSOC 2022 Partnership Forum, held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York. In his speech, the deputy permanent representative of the Angolan mission to the UN stated that the country, like other States, was severely affected by the pandemic crisis, mainly due to the drop in oil prices on international financial markets and the conditioning of activity national production.
According to João Gimolieca, the measures to contain the pandemic directly affected the profitability and supply of businesses and increased unemployment on a large scale, enumerating the three major challenges that the country faces in the short and medium term for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, namely keeping the economy under control, in particular, for the balance of fiscal accounts, external accounts and the stability of the purchasing power of the national currency, supporting economic recovery and the development of the private sector.
He also defended the implementation of social programs to fight poverty and unemployment, aggravated by the economic and health crises of Covid-19 and climate change.
The second major challenge, according to the diplomat, focuses on accelerating efforts at economic diversification, to reduce structural vulnerability, recognized in the request to postpone graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) to February 2024
. improving the quality of education and professional skills for young people, as well as the transfer of technology in order to promote a more sustainable, resilient development and contribute to the diversification of the economy.
João Gimolieca stressed that the motto “leave no one behind” is evident in Angola’s National Development Plan (PND), namely, gender equality and the creation of better conditions for all Angolans.
