Africa-Press – Angola. Angola will launch, next July, an international public tender for the concession of the “Corredor Sul”, which encompasses the Port of Namibe and the Moçâmedes Railway (CFM), the Minister of Transport announced this Sunday, Ricardo de Abreu.
Speaking on the sidelines of the visit that the President of the Republic made to the Port of Namibe, to learn about the rehabilitation works at Moçâmedes Bay, the minister maintained that the economy of this region guarantees the viability of the concession.
“It is an interesting case of integration of different modes and the contribution of the transport and logistics sectors to sectoral economies. And within the scope of activating our corridors, the idea is to extend them to neighboring countries, such as Namibia and Zambia and this investment will remain within the scope of the concession as an obligation on the part of the concessionaire”, he highlighted.
Ricardo de Abreu stated that the focus is to extend the CFM from Menongue to Rivungo, passing through Mavinga (Cuando Cubango) and then to Cunene, to then connect to Namibia
Regarding the works, the minister said that they are “at a good level” and will be inaugurated in the third quarter of 2025, as part of the Executive’s strategy to activate national corridors.
Port of Namibe accounts for 50 percent of national exports
When presenting the project to President João Lourenço, Ricardo de Abreu stated that the Port of Namibe has an export vocation and currently accounts for 50 percent of what is exported in the country.
The numbers for 2023, said the minister, represent 300 thousand tons, mostly ornamental rocks in their raw state.
