Africa-Press – Angola. Angola loses 500 million U.S. dollars annually due to illegal fishing and deficiencies in the sector’s administrative processes, said the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Carmen do Sacramento Neto, on Friday in Luanda.

Speaking at the opening of the 5th Blue Economy Conference, which was promoted by Economia e Mercado magazine, Neto cited illegal fishing as a challenge that must be overcome in order to establish Angola as a regional maritime power.

According to Neto, the losses extend throughout the entire value chain, not just the fishing process. Other challenges include the insufficient contribution of coastal tourism, the need for greater investment in modern processing, conservation, and marketing infrastructure, and the need to simplify some administrative processes.

Despite these challenges, the minister noted that the country achieved a 9 percent increase in fishing production in 2023, reaching 521,379 tons. The preliminary volume in 2024 was around 540,000 tons.

Neto emphasized the urgent need to invest in human capital training and implement sustainable governance policies to develop the maritime sector, diversify the national economy, and reduce dependence on oil.

The 5th Blue Economy Conference focuses on the strategy to finance and enhance the sea cluster in Angola.

The event brings together representatives from the Fund to Support the Development of Industry, Research, and Aquaculture; Grupo AA; the Credit Guarantee Fund (FGC); and the Office of Studies and Planning of Secil Marítima.
