Angola participates in meeting of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Africa-Press – Angola. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, has been, since Sunday, in Geneva, Switzerland, to participate, from the 9th to the 13th of October, in the 74th session of the Executive Committee of the High Commission of United Nations for Refugees (ExCom acronym in English).

For this event, Esmeralda Mendonça heads an Angolan multisectoral delegation that includes ambassador Margarida Izata, representative of the Permanent Mission to the UN, in Geneva, diplomats from the Permanent Mission, specialists from the humanitarian sector assigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior.

A press release sent, states that Angola is participating in this event for the first time as a Member State, after its election on April 5, 2023, in New York, as the 108th member of the ExCom.

In this session of the Committee, Angola will intervene in the general debate, which should focus on regional and global issues regarding the challenges of migration, as well as on the country’s multi-annual voluntary financial contribution to this UN Agency.

Parallel to the program of the 74th session of UNHCR, the Angolan delegation has several meetings on its agenda, namely with Raouf Mazou, Deputy High Commissioner for UNHCR Operations, with the ambassador of the United States of America, with the Minister of Business Foreigners, Cooperation and Communities of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Princípe, Gareth Guadalupe, among other meetings.

ExCom is a subsidiary body of the United Nations General Assembly that came into operation on January 1, 1959.
