Africa-Press – Angola. On Tuesday, Angola presented at UN headquarters in York the notable progress achieved in the Health sector, highlighting the reduction in the neonatal mortality rate from 24 to 16 per thousand live births, in the period between 2016 and 2024.

The speech was made by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, during the general debate of the 58th Session of the Commission on Population and Development, which takes place from the 7th to the 11th of this month, under the theme: “Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, at all ages.

‎Esmeralda Mendonça, quoted in a press release, added that in the period in question, the maternal mortality rate decreased by around 29%, as a result of improved access to maternal and child health services, the expansion of the vaccination programme and the strengthening of sexual and reproductive health services.

‎Esmeralda Mendonça also mentioned that the demographic structure of Angola, a young country, with around 66% of its population under 25 years of age, represents a set of great opportunities and significant challenges.

‎In this context, she reaffirmed the Angolan Government’s commitment to transforming this potential into progress through solid investments in education, health, employment and the empowerment of young people and women.
