Angola ratifies SADC protocol on environmental management

Africa-Press – Angola. The National Assembly (AN) unanimously approved this Friday, the Draft Resolution for Angola’s ratification of the SADC Protocol on Environmental Management for Sustainable Development.

Approved with 156 votes in favor, none against and no abstentions, the document is a regional agreement developed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), an inter-governmental organization made up of 16 countries in the region.

The protocol addresses a variety of issues related to the environment, including biodiversity protection, waste management, conservation of water resources, pollution control and climate change mitigation.

The treaty establishes guidelines and principles for SADC Member States to adopt and implement in their own countries, with the aim of achieving economic development that is ecologically sustainable.

Signed in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on 18 August 2014, this protocol aims to promote sustainable environmental management and the conservation of natural resources in the Southern African region.

Likewise, it promotes regional cooperation between SADC Member States with regard to encouraging the exchange of information, technology, as well as best practices between countries in the region.

It aims to strengthen environmental protection to improve human health and well-being, promote the equitable and sustainable use of natural resources, foster shared management of the transboundary environment and effectively deal with the impacts of climate change.

The Secretary of State for Climate Action and Sustainable Development, Paula Coelho, highlighted, on the occasion, Angola’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly on the environment, whose recommendations will be implemented within the National Sea Strategy.

Declarations of vote

Representative Florbela Malaquias, from PHA, justified her vote in favor by understanding that sustainable development is a tool that boosts humanism in various ways.

“We consider this to be humanism, as sustainable environmental management defends the equality and dignity of all human beings and guarantees the well-being of all generations”, he expressed.

On the other hand, deputy João Bernardo, from UNITA, hopes that Angola’s ratification of the Protocol “will be another opportunity that will allow the Angolan Government to join a stage for sharing experiences with regard to good environmental management for a good sustainable development, in order to guarantee good ecological services that humanity lacks”.

He said it is a collective responsibility to meet the Paris climate goals, in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 50 percent by 2030, to prevent the environmental imbalance of which Angolans are also victims, especially in the south. from the country.

The Plenary of the National Assembly also unanimously approved the Draft Resolution for Angola’s ratification of the Protocol on Common Hydrographic Systems in the SADC Region.

The Protocol on Common Hydrographic Systems in the SADC Region was signed on August 18, 1999, in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa.

Angola, as a full member of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), exercises its rights and fulfills its obligations, one of which is its binding to Agreements, Protocols and other instruments that are considered important for the pursuit of purposes and objectives of the same.

The Protocol will guarantee regional scientific, technical, technological, legal-administrative and commercial cooperation in the field of use and management of hydrological resources shared by the countries of the region.
