Angola reaffirms its commitment to promoting the interests of the African continent

Africa-Press – Angola. Angola’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Francisco da Cruz, reaffirmed, on Saturday, in New York (USA), the country’s engagement in promoting the continent’s interests and ensuring that peace issues and African security take their rightful place on the global agenda.

Ambassador Francisco da Cruz reaffirmed this commitment while speaking at the Retreat of African Member States of the United Nations Security Council and its partners, which took place under the motto “Improving A3+: An Innovative Tool for Sustained Defense in the United Nations Security Council.”

Addressing those present, in his capacity as president of the African group for the month of April, in New York, he highlighted that the Retreat appears to be a crucial meeting that aims to strengthen Africa’s collective voice in the Security Council of Nations United.

“Today, as we convene this Retreat, we find ourselves at a crucial moment in history, where the actions we take will shape the trajectory of our collective security efforts,” he said.

For the representative of Angola, it is a platform for reflection, innovation and strategic planning, as we continue our efforts to support the A3+ mechanism and amplify Africa’s voice in global peace and security issues.

During the Retreat, participants addressed several critical issues, such as topics on Women, Peace and Security and Youth.

The event, organized by the African Union Permanent Observer Mission, was attended by the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, and the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Africa, Martha Pobee.

The occasion also served to take stock of progress, identify challenges and chart a course forward that reflects the decisions of the African Union Peace and Security Council and its Assembly.

The moment provided an opportunity to build on the momentum generated by the adoption of the A3+ Guiding Principles (3 African SC Member States, plus one Caribbean Member State), which serve as a cornerstone for collective action, guided by efforts to articulate and defend common African positions in the Security Council.

Also participating in the Retreat were representatives from Algeria, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Guyana, current Members of the A3+1 configuration, from Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Tunisia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadine, former members of that configuration, from Mauritania, Acting President of the African Union, and Egypt by the Peacebuilding Commission.
