Angola sees business opportunities at economic forum with Japan

Africa-Press – Angola. The chairman of the Board of Directors of the Private Investment and Export Promotion Agency (AIPEX) of Angola, Lello Francisco, sees the Angola-Japan Economic Forum as an opportunity to strengthen the partnership between the two private sectors countries.

The forum takes place on Monday (13) in the Japanese city of Tokyo, as part of the official visit that the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, is making, from the 12th to the 15th of the current month, to the Asian country at the invitation of the local authorities.

Speaking to the press, Lello Francisco said that the forum will also be an opportunity to promote and publicize the investment opportunities that Angola offers in sectors such as fisheries, industry, agriculture, health and the pharmaceutical industry.

Eighteen Angolan and 60 Japanese companies confirmed their presence at the Economic Forum, an event in which the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, will be the main speaker.

In Japan, to take part in the forum, Angolan businessman Adérito Areias, with investments in the fishing sector, informed that the Asian country is one of the biggest tuna consumers.

“We have a lot of tuna in our waters. We have to convince them to form a partnership so that something concrete can be done”, said the businessman.

As for the possibility of partnership in the agro-industrial sector, the businessman understands that Angola should take advantage of the fact that Japan has developed this segment, creating a business environment that convinces the Japanese to invest in the Angolan market.

Present in the Japanese capital, the coordinator of the Economic and Social Council, Octávio Serra Van-Dúnem, considered the meeting an opportunity to understand how these dynamics occur in the world and how to apply them in Angola.

Manuel Sumbula, president of the Associação das Indústrias de Bebidas de Angola, said that the intention is to share the experience with Japanese businessmen in the chapter of agribusiness and development of the manufacturing industry.

“The important thing will also be to convey confidence to the Japanese so that they invest in our country and create partnerships with Angolan businessmen”, he said.

Trade in goods traded between Angola and Japan represented US$108 million in exports and US$489 million in imports, in the period 2020-2022, corresponding to a negative balance of around US$380 million.

Angola exports fuel (crude oil, propane and butane) and, on the other hand, imports vehicles, auto parts, transport materials, machinery, appliances, plastics, rubber (tires, rubber tubes), iron and steel.
