Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, on Monday in Malabo invited African countries to turn concerns about trade taxes imposed by the United States of America into an opportunity to strengthen the continent economic integration.
The minister was taking on assessment of the work of the VII biannual summit of the African Union (AU) that ended on Sunday in Malabo, which, among other geopolitical issues, addressed the implications of trade tariffs imposed by the US on world economies, particularly on the African continent, which is “a major market”.
Tête António stressed that this new scenario made it necessary to create conditions in Africa to make the opportunities arising from it a reality.
The work of this VII biannual coordination meeting between the AU, the regional economic communities (RECs) and the regional mechanisms (RMs) took place from 10 to 13 July in the capital of Equatorial Guinea, under the presidency of Angola.
The head of Angolan diplomacy said that, during the meeting, the acting president of the African Union and Angolan head of state, João Lourenço, essentially learned about the various reports presented to the “mother house” by the eight pillars (CERs) that support it.
He highlighted the report on the balance sheet of the AU Implementing Agency, AUDA-NEPAD, which addresses the creation of a Fund for the Development of the continent announced by the AU president, last May, in Luanda, at a meeting with African multilateral financial institutions.
Another document analysed was that of the Division of Labour, within the framework of the AU Conference of January 2017 towards a clear division of tasks and effective collaboration between the AU, the RECs, the RMs and other continental institutions, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity.
The summit also took note of the election by the Executive Board of the Commissioners for Economic Development, Trade, Industry and Mineral Resources (ETTIM) of Equatorial Guinea and for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (ESTI) of Burundi. On the same occasion, members of the Anti-Corruption Council were elected.
