Africa-Press – Angola. Angola expressed concern on Wednesday about the exponential increase in violence in the Middle East since the 7 October attack.
The country’s position was expressed by Angola’s permanent representative to the United Nations, in New York, ambassador Francisco José da Cruz, during the Tenth Special Emergency Session of the UN General Assembly on the “Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.
On the occasion, he stated that Angola condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, regardless of its motivations or actors, highlighting that the conflict in the Middle East worsens human suffering every day and takes the lives of innocent civilians, including women and children.
He said that the country is also alarmed by the likelihood of the Gaza crisis turning into a regional conflict, with dangerous implications for international peace and stability.
In his view, the international community must mitigate these risks, urging all parties to exercise restraint, calm the escalation and respect the norms of international law.
“The only viable way to achieve lasting peace is through dialogue and the peaceful resolution of disputes”, he stressed.
It was in this context that, according to Francisco José da Cruz, Angola supported the UN General Assembly Resolution approved on October 27th, which, among other fundamental messages, calls for an immediate, lasting and sustainable humanitarian truce that leads to the cessation of hostilities and the immediate and unconditional release of all civilian hostages.
The aforementioned resolution also demands the immediate, continuous, sufficient and unhindered supply of essential goods and services to civilians through the Gaza Strip, under international humanitarian law.
Reaffirms that a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved through peaceful means, based on relevant United Nations resolutions and in accordance with international law, and based on a two-State solution.
During his speech, he praised the humanitarian work carried out by UN staff in very difficult and challenging conditions to save lives, which demonstrates his unwavering commitment to the values of human dignity and international solidarity.
For the diplomat, the current peace and security challenges in the Middle East demonstrate the urgency of giving priority to the search for a fair and sustainable solution, based on the application of relevant United Nations resolutions and international law, with the aim of achieving both States – Israel and Palestine – living side by side in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders.
He added that the United Nations continues to be the best hope and the last frontier for pacification and the maintenance of peace, to prevent conflicts and resolve international disputes. However, he highlighted that these challenges reinforce Angola’s conviction about the urgent need to reform the United Nations system, especially its Security Council, to make it effective, representative and inclusive, and capable of strengthening multilateralism as a way of dealing with common and interconnected threats to preserve global peace and security.
