Africa-Press – Angola. Angolan boxer Pedro Gomes lost, (Monday), in Milan (Italy), to Chinese Lyu Ping, in the 57 kg category, in boxing at the Pre-Olympic Tournament to qualify for the Paris 2024 Games, in France.
In a five-round fight, the left-handed “Black Panther” was unable to overcome the Asian, by decision of the judges, who awarded two (2) points against three (3) for his opponent.
The aforementioned result, which was highly contested, surprised the country’s technical and management team, in this case the president of the Angolan Boxing Federation (FABOXE), Simão Muanda, who regretted the criteria used.
In previous “fights”, the son of the former practitioner of the same name (Pedro Gomes), defeated the Canadian Victor Tremblay, as well as Zing Liu, representative of Hong Kong.
To reach the Paris2024 Olympic Games, the African would have to win the last two challenges of the event.
The 57 kg category is being contested by 52 boxers, who are fighting to reach the final.
From May 26th to June 4th, the second global window of access to the Paris Olympic Games will take place, taking place in the city of Bangkok, Thailand.
Angola was absent from the first (1st) African qualification window, held in September 2023, in Dakar, Senegal.
Angolan boxing last attended the Olympic Games in the London edition, in 2012, with boxer Ntumba Silva, but ended up defeated without competing, after failing to weigh in.
The first Angolan representation took place at the Moscow Olympic Games, in 1980, with boxers João de Almeida, Abílio Cabral and Alberto Coelho.
