Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan women parliamentarians group called on Thursday, for the strengthening of structural measures aimed at promoting gender equality and combating violence against women.

The position was expressed in a statement read at the opening of the 7th Ordinary Plenary Meeting, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8.

The group recognizes the role of Angolan women in the country’s development and highlights their active participation in the sectors of economy, politics, education, among others, with relevant contributions to social transformation and overcoming historical barriers.

Despite the progress, the parliamentarians warn of the persistence of inequalities of opportunity and discriminatory practices based on gender, as well as the high rates of violence against women in various forms.

The group points out that Angola has made significant progress in the legislative, political, and institutional fields, in accordance with the principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic, but mentions the existence of challenges that require greater commitment from the authorities and society.

At the regional level, it indicates that Southern Africa still faces profound inequalities, which necessitates strengthening the collective commitment within SADC, with a view to ensuring greater inclusion and participation of women in economic, social, and political life.

The female members of parliament consider that the eradication of gender-based violence should be a national priority, focusing on strengthening the legal framework, its effective application, promoting education for equality, and strengthening support mechanisms for victims.

They also highlight the importance of women’s economic empowerment, with special attention to young women, as well as encouraging the reporting of abuse cases and applying harsher sanctions for crimes of sexual violence.
